Iphone 5s invalid ESN

My son purchased a used iPhone online and of course, the seller said it would work on Straight Talk with a new SIMS card.  Well, unfortunately it did not work and now the seller has me blocked!!  When I looked up the IMEI # it showed that it was originally NCIC "passed" but Verizon showed "invalidESN".  What does that mean and can this phone be made usable or did he just waste $100??

It may be an ATT version and will only work with a GSM sim  card.

Are you trying to use on Verizon, or Straight talk?

If sold by ST, it may be carrier locked

BASHOREDA2000, I would be concerned in this situation as well. It is always best to check the device ID before making a phone purchase. What carrier does the phone say it is from? A device also has to be active on a postpaid account for at least 30 days before switching it to prepaid if it's not a prepaid device.
