A friend of mine is giving me his iPhone 5. He is a Verizon customer as well. What is involved in getting that phone activated? He mentioned something about a SIM card. I currently have a 4s, and I understand that card cant be used in the 5.

Yes, you would need to get a 4g Sim Card for it (unless he gives you his)

You will need a new SIM card for your line. The person who you are getting the phone from should keep the SIM card for their line.
You can request a SIM card through customer service, your MyVerizon account online in the "Switch Device" option or at a corporate store. All three options should get you a SIM card for free.

The SIM card contains information about the line it is currently attached to. It shouldn't be sold with the device.

Dear mikect01,
Good afternoon. The iPhone 5 is an aswesome device. What an awesome friend you have. Knowing what steps to take to activate the phone are important.
The SIM card in the iPhone 4s is not compatible with the iPhone 5. If your friend did not provide you with the SIM card, you may also obtain a SIM card by visiting a store location. To view a list of our store locations click http://vz.to/3SdsA Once you have the SIM card for the iPhone 5, you may then activate the device by contacting our Customer Service Department or accessing your account online by clicking http://bit.ly/xB4iTc Should you have further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us.
Thank You,
