Assigned ringtones do not play when assigned contacts call

Yesterday I purchased the iPhone 5C.  I assigned different ringtones to specific contacts, but when they call only the default ringtones play.  Is there something other than setting ringtones up in contacts that I need to do?

Thank you for your reply.  I did already take all of these steps, and when I look up each contact, it always says what ringtone it's supposed to play - but when the call comes in, it always go back to the default ringtone.

Strange. mine work great. go to the Apple forum http://www.apple.com

under support, choose community forums and type in the search for the problem you are having.

there may be a fix from appke.

Thank you.  I posted on the apple forum just before I asked here.  If I don't hear anything, or can't figure it out I'll swing by a verizon store.  If THAT doesn't help, I'll go to the apple sotre.  😕  I appreciate your help.
