Press the keyboard so you have numbers instead of speaker mute etc.

Keypad. Not sure if pressing power button would cancel call. I just put my ear to it and not my face.

It could be how you're holding the phone against your face...or you could somehow still have a device that has a proximity sensor issue (not sure how long you have had your device). When you place the phone to your ear does the screen go dark? You can test this by putting your finger near the sensor while on an active call...the sensor is near the top of the screen on the left side of the earpiece. If it goes black when you do that then the proximity sensor is working fine and the issue may be associated with how you are holding it. If it doesn't then you might want to contact tech support and have them check it...assuming you are still under warranty or you have the extended warranty plan then it should be replaced. Also, if you are near an Apple store you can take it in for them to look at it.

Hi WOW2877,

I know how this could be driving you crazy. Depending on where the mute button is on the display of the phone, it is possible to hit this button when on a call. The setting on the phone turns the screen off after one minute. The lowest time limit is one minute. Do you notice that the phone goes mute within one minute of your call? The steps to check this setting are:

Settings>General>Auto-lock. Please choose the lowest, or one minute.

Thanks for posting!

If its a white iPhone 4 and you have the three hole otterbox then the proximity sensor is covered you need to get one of the newer one hole otterbox cases
