I'm trying to update my 4S from 7.1.2 to 9. Originally the phone sent me a message that it was going to temporarily "delete" some apps so it could update. After doing that the icons for those apps turned dark and of course they don't work. However I have not been able to get the phone to update, either through the phone or Itunes. Any suggestions?
At a minimum I would like to be able to reinstall the apps so I can keep using them.

The "temp.." delete pop-up is something new with iOS 9 and is supposed to auto delete the least used apps and re-install them post update. Try to go into the App Store on the device and click on updates and see if any are able to be stopped from updating. Sometimes they turn grey / dark when they are stuck trying to update. e.g. if the device is out of memory etc. You can also try to remove some of the apps manually by long pressing them until they jiggle and then tap on the "x" in the corner of the app. Honestly, this should not be happening since the "temp..." remove apps message popped up but I'd simply try to free up some space to see if that is causing the update to not want to proceed. Let us know if you find a solution.
