Why am I being told to connect to itunes and restore?
mengh
Newbie

I have the iphone 4 white 8g. I saw that the iOS 5.1 update was available so i tried to update my phone. After i pushed the button, the symbol of the charger chord with an arrow pointing to the itunes icon (meaning connect to itunes). I connected my phone to itunes and the only option was to completely restore my phone. i turned my phone on and off several times but the image stayed on the screen. I have all my music, calendars, photos, contacts and many others items that i can not afford to lose. I don't know where to ask for help since Apple does not have live online chatting anymore. Please give me ideas of how to solve this problem!

-Thank you

Did u do the update? U need to have the phone on wifi at least. It suggests that u plug it in. just saying this but it probably isent reletive to your problem. U can do the update on the computer then u have to plug the phone to install it.

Wifi is only when u want to download the update directly to the phone.

You said that you turned your phone off and on several times, when you say that, do you mean that you pressed the top sleep/wake button several times?

All you are doing by pressing the top button is putting the phone to sleep and waking it up, you aren't actually shutting it off, because of this, when you wake it back up, it's still in USB mode

First, try holding down the top button (not just press it, but hold it down until you get a slide bar on the screen), there should be a message that says "slide to power off" on the top and "Cancel" on the bottom, then slide the slide bar, you should see a spinning wheel and it should power off, then press the top button to turn it back on

If you hold down the top button and nothing happens, hold down both the top button and the home button below the screen together and don't let go until you see the glass apple, after the iPhone resets, it should return to your lock screen, then connect to WiFi and try updating again
