How do I get the ringtones that are in Itunes to appear on my iPhone?

Pgabag (are u a caddy?), to have ringtones assigned to contacts, notifications, etc., you need to use a Ringtone App.  Some are free, some are paid.  Some are easy to use, some are a pain-in-the-a#%.  Apple has a thing (like with so many "things" they like to control) where they don't just let you assign a song to a Contact's ringtone directly from your Music Library.

I use Ringtone Designer by Blackout Labs.  I use the free app and it works just fine.  They have both a paid and a free one.  If you search "Ringtones" in the App Store you'll get lots of choices.

You have to sync your phone to the computer and click your device then music click purchases have it check and sync. If you don't want all purchases then on the min screen about the phone on computer check sync only checked songs. Under theeft hand side under purchases it will show you what your purchases are.

Clarification - did you already properly download some ringtones via an App into iTunes?  If so, they would appear under "Tones" in iTunes when your device is connected to iTunes (via cable or wirelessly).  Click on your device in the left panel then at the top (under the Apple icon) there should be a Menu item labeled "Tones".  Click that and it will give you the option to Sync all or only selected Tones.  Once you've done that click "Synch" (bottom right corner if u didn't already know).

After Synching, you can open your Contacts and assign one of the Synched Tones to a selected contact or in "Sounds" under General Settings for Texts, e-Mail, etc.

Hope this helps.

When I Sync the ringtone folder doesn't show up in iTunes or in my phone. The only ringtones I have access to are the ones preloaded?

How did you obtain your ringtones?  Purchase via iTunes?  Where/how you obtained them dictates how you get them into iTunes in order to synch to your phone.

The problem is if I want to set my ringer to a certain Ringtone, ie Rolling Stones Start me up, I go to setup, sounds highlight ringer, this opens up the ringtones folder and the only ringtones that are in that folder are the ones that were preloaded. I see the ringtones under music but you can’t select from that folder to make those your ringer. BG

I am having the same problem. I even bought a ringtone from Itunes, and it still won't show up in Tones... only in Music.  I have tried everything and googled this to no end Smiley Sad

Ringtones can be tricky (as we have all learned here!) on iOS devices.  The clue is understanding precisely what you are buying/downloading (that is, is it REALLY a Ringtone or just a short version of a song labeled in iTunes as a Ringtone but it really isn't - stay with me ...).

Long and short of it is you really need to have a Ringtone App on your Device for MOST "Tones" downloaded - not ALL, but most.

I came across an excellent User Review in iTunes which helps explain, in detail, what I'm trying to convey and, rather than repeat or plagiarize it, I have included the link.  It's for a specific Ringtone Album because I couldn't find a way to get a link to just the Review.  Open the link, under the Album artwork click "View in iTunes", go to Reviews, sort by "Most Recent" and the first one that shows up (as of today anyway) is by Jenn Nichols, titled "Here's a Solution ...".  The link is:  http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/ringtone-hits-vol.-2/id498297546

Hope this helps clarify some of the confusion and frustration you are experiencing with your Ringtones.  In my experience once I downloaded a Ringtone App I could make ANY song a Ringtone or Text Tone.  Some are free, some are paid, some are overly complex to use, some easier (none, though, are EASY - just the nature of iOS), but in the end you get your songs converted to Tones.  Once in Tones on iTunes they will Synch to All you iOS devices as such.
