Network problems and rapid battery drain

I have had my iPhone 4s replaced by Verizon once already for network issues. With the replacement one, running the current iOS 6.1.3 my battery drain is horrible. I have contacted apple for advice and have followed it (restore/setup as new iPhone) And am still having issues with both battery drain and network connection. I know that 3G is going to be slower then 4G (obviously). However almost any app that I use tends to give "network errors" almost all the time. Also my battery usage was significant even after just setting up my iPhone as new without any apps. While my phone is still covered if I choose to call into tech support, I am cautious to do this again and again. Has anyone had any luck in getting around these issues? (besides disabling cellular data/not using apps...because this is a smartphone). I never had any issues prior to updating to the most current iOS version however...
