You can only do ring backs through the vzw website. First you have to pay $1 monthly.

gina is right - you can't do ringbacks through iTunes. Log in to your account at verizonwireless.com and then go to Media, Ringtones and ringbacks, and purchase there. The tunes stay on Verizon's servers, and you pay for each tune plus a 99¢ subscription fee each month. Use the Manage ringbacks to specify who hears each tune or if you want a random tune to play, or just one for everyone.

The OP is talking about ringBACK tones, which are stored on Verizon's servers and limited to the tunes they specify. For Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, or basic phones. There's a difference between ringtones and ringback tones - and while using any music file may be a bit simpler on an Android, you can still use any music file on just about any phone for a ringtone.
Ringbacks are another story....

I've been trying for a year and I FINALLY got it . This is the scoop.
To buy/change a RINGTONE you have to buy it on iTunes.
Go to Settings, then Sounds and change it there.
To change a RING BACK tone you can only buy/change it through Verizon on a COMPUTER and not a phone.
Go to your Verizon Wireless Website and sign in. Then:
1) click on My Verizon tab
2) scroll to "manage ringback tones".
3) Drop and drag your ringback tone into EACH day of the week AND the default Ringback tone.
This did it for me. There is a problem with Verizons website that the default tone is not "defaulting" Good luck!!
