Can I occasionally use my smartphone sim in my ipad.

Both devices are verizon devices and use the same size sim.

The phone is mine and currently using my grandfathered unlimited data/450 minute plan.

The ipad was given to me by a friend who previously had it on a verizon data plan.

Excellent question Ricardo1234. Ignore the misinformation the previous posters replied to you. They are trying to discourage you from using your SIM card in an iPad. The beauty that the grandfathered unlimited data plan that you have is that you CAN just take the SIM card out of your phone and place it in your iPad. I recommend you buy a used jetpack and place your SIM card in that. That way you'll be able to use your iPad, phone and laptop all at the same time. Another plus is that I believe your speed will be greater if you use a MiFi device. Your grandfathered unlimited data will NOT DROP. I have my SIM card on a MiFi device and I leave it there all the time. With the Verizon messages app, my calls and messages come through as if I had my SIM card on my phone. Phone function works as if it had a SIM card except the native calling and texting app.

Don't be a sucker and let these posters here try to persuade you to go with the more expensive "unlimited" data plans. With those new plans, it is against the terms of conditions to swap your SIM card onto "non compatible" device.

How is it terrible advice? With his plan, he is able to use multiple devices at the same time. Why limit yourself to just one when his intention is to want to use multiple devices. As I stated before, I have had a micro sim card on my jetpack for YEARS and I have never received any letters threatning to cut me off. I think you have it confused for people who live in the boonies and are roaming and Verizon cut them off because they are costing the company money or people who bought those plans from eBay brokers and they got that plan illegally. I live in the city and use my unlimited data as I see fit. No deprioritazion and no slowing down during peak hours.

That's a very stupid analogy about someone stealing a candy bar, no one stole anything. I pay for this plan and I am use it as I see fit. I am well within terms and conditions for MY plan. Your past posts should be removed for the condecending way you type to people. Maybe you have been in the zoo too long that you don't go out.

Someone on this forum can look at my account and they will not do anything.

This is a reply to my own original post because the well-meaning responders seemed to be all over the place with their answers. I decided to go direct to VZW via chat and I am happy to report that I am allowed to move the sim between my phone and ipad whenever I want to browse the web over 4G from my ipad. And it will not jeopardize my plan.

Below is a portion of my online chat with VZW for those who would like to see something in writing from the company. I will do a final reply after I try it later to let those who care know how it goes. Thanks to all who took the time to read or respond to my question.

Verizon-You will need to remove the sim card from the LG G7 thinq from your device and turn the device OFF and insert the sim card on the IPad after that turn ON the device (IPad) ensure that the LG G7 is turned off.
You-so it is OK to take sim out of phone, put in ipad? use it in ipad ?. then put back in phone and use in phone ...and do this on occasion whenever I want to browse web over 4g from ipad?
Verizon-Absolutely!
Verizon-Yes, it's the correct procedure which can follow for your occasionally as per your convenience.
You-and I wont cause my grandfathered unlimited data / nationwide 450 minutes plan to get lost/changed/canceled?
Verizon-No, there will be no effect on the Unlimited plan rest assured.
Verizon-All you need to is put the sim card to the IPad and that will do.

Final update - I have returned the sim to my phone and it works as it should. I also checked my account info and I am still listed as having my original plan - nothing seems to have changed. So, I'll call it a happy outcome and I'll not be afraid to use my phone sim in my ipad one those special occasions when I'll need my ipad more than my phone. Hope this thread helps others who share my original concerns.

You can try, it might work.

You should be VERY careful when doing this. Verizon has separate plan categories for phones and tablets. Placing your SIM card from your phone in your iPad may automatically switch your plan from a phone plan to a tablet plan and therefore losing your grandfathered unlimited data. Once the plan is switched, it could be very hard if not impossible to get your previous plan(i.e. grandfathered unlimited data) back.

I agree with rcschnoor. The iPad is coded differently from the iPhone in the Verizon Wireless system.

You are also violating the terms of your customer agreement. The none of the 4G LTE capable Jetpacks, USB modems or tablets are allowed on an unlimited data line with the Nationwide Plan with grandfathered unlimited smartphone data plan feature. Those devices were also forbidden to be on the long retired unlimited mobile broadband plan since the first 4G LTE USB modem was announced in 2009.

Stop spreading misinformation again and I am not violating the terms and conditions of anything. People who have grandfathered plans are ALLOWED to place our sim card in any 4G capable device and not be used against us when Verizon outbid google for the 700 Mhz C Block spectrum. I have had my sim card on a jetpack for YEARS and I do so because my plan allows it. Don't spread misinformation to people with older plans when you and Verizon clearly want them off that plan.

and I quote the this website phonenews.com article stating, "It’s no secret if you poke around, that you can pull your smartphone SIM card out and use it with all sorts of other devices. From the Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE, to portable hotspot devices like the Novatel MiFi, people have been doing that for awhile. In fact, Verizon was required to…

Verizon appears to be abiding by spectrum auction terms set by the FCC, and is not kicking people off their data plans. The coveted 700 MHz spectrum that Verizon licensed had strings attached… powerful strings. Specifically, the auction rules forbid a carrier from blocking end-user device changes with serial-number restrictions.

In other words, the FCC wanted to ensure that if a user swapped LTE SIMs (when using the new spectrum) that it would be the consumer’s choice to do so, sans penalty."

The 4G LTE mobile broadband devices have never been allowed to on the non-prioritized unlimited plans.
