Interesting my problems (and many others) went away instantly once hard reset was done. Wonder if you might have a defective device....
A hard reset is completely different than a soft reset. Not to say you didn't but you went to settings > about and tapped on reset your phone?

Hard reset is key. I've had this clear up problems on my Lumia Icon, BlackBerry Q10 and Z10, and on an iPhone. Along with a simple restart, the hard reset is a huge problem solver.

BryanSP We want you to love your device again. We apologize for the issues since the update, however, there is not a way to go back to the previous version. Have you attempted any basic troubleshooting for the freezing issues? For the battery overheating, the device would need to be taken into a corporate store for inspection.

Sorry, you are wrong. There is a way to go back to 8.0 and it's rather easy to do. Download the Nokia Software updater for retail and follow the instructions.
I would do a hard reset before reverting back to 8.0 and also after you reload 8.0. Just as extra step to make sure the base system is installed correctly and then reload your apps. Do not restore an old backup. This backup consist of some data from 8.1 and could screw something up. Reload your apps from scratch and set up your start screen from scratch.
This is what you should download and install to go back to 8.0:
Nokia Software updater for Retail. version 4.1.0

BryanSP,
Yes you can revert back to WP8.0
Here is there link that takes you to Nokia's website.
FAQ - FAQ - How can I recover/reset/restore my phone software? - Nokia - USA
You'll have to download and run Nokia's Software Recovery Tool. It will wipe EVERTHING on your phone and install the latest WP8.0 build that was released to Verizon.

Microsoft officially release W8.1 to cell providers a couple of days ago. VerizonWireless: What's the ETA for distributing 8.1 to Nokia Lumia 928 users? A phone call, email or snail mail would be nice! Tnx!!

VZW does not publicly announce reschedule for software updates until the day they are released.
I've had this argument with them over the phone numerous times and it falls on deaf ears.

Arrrgh! Thanks!
VerizonWireless: we pay a premium for better service and that includes being informed on the technical environment we operate on i.e. Windows 8. You have a tentative schedule you are working on to deliver the W8.1 update to the various Nokia (which you now own) devices. Share it with us with the proviso that the schedule is subject to change. That falls into a category you pride yourselves called Technical Customer Service.

I too have brought that up
List the tentative release date with the huge caveat of subject to change.
