Several of my contacts have disappeared from my phone

Several of my contacts have disappeared from my phone and they are not on the Backup Assistant website. How can I get them back??? They were not in trash

What is the make/model of the phone? Do you recall the last time you actually backed the phone up? Have you backed any of the information to a computer at any point in time?
