I know you don't use iOS but I have five devices updating or updated and the Apple update is messing around already. I have had to reset two iPads more than once. The one iPhone came up with a failed message.

So updates are not always a good thing. But I know its an Apple issue so I will look up other posts at Apple to find a fix.

Sometimes you may not want any update.

Good Morning

While I can respect your opinion, I tend more to disagree.  No amount of testing is every going to ensure 100% that there won't be issues.  I'd rather receive the update and learn the problems that exist and let the developers fix the issues, than not receive any update at all.  Prime example is the Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview.  Microsoft released it and there were issues, but what better way to test software than to have thousands of testers out there who acknowledge that there is no warranty, might void your warranty, etc. and that Microsoft nor Verizon is responsible.  If you don't want to chance it, don't install the update.  But at least you have the choice.  Maybe you'll brick your device, maybe you'll have a much better device.  Some people are willing to take the chance.

Ha ha "no amount of testing is correct" The Apple iOS 8 is being tested right now by those users. Updating their devices.

Fixed all the issues from the update. Except one. But its minor ha ha

This is a prime example of what I've been saying.  HTC announces that a phone of theirs from 2012 is getting the Windows Phone 8.1 update in October.  Wow, not only do they know that they are getting it, but now they have a good idea of when to expect it.

Lumia Icon owners know absolutely nothing.  Whether that is the fault of Verizon, Microsoft, Nokia or Satan himself, it is very poor customer service!  Where is ANY information for us Icon owners regarding our update.  Will we get Cyan or Denim, or nothing at all.  If we will get it, when MIGHT we expect to see it?

Big Red says NOTHING to us and I just consider that poor customer service and RUDE!!!!!

Come on already Verizon, tell us SOMETHING!!!

I am agreeing with your principal of throwing updates out like Apple does.

I am also saying that even their update has minor flaws in it. Correctable ones but update changes a customer should be aware of. Just getting all my Bluetooth devices to hook back up required to work had me remove everyone of them and pair again. Took time but it was not a Verizon issue.

The last minor glitch was having all the idevices ring whenever a call call came into my phone.

My other iPhone rang and two iPad airs rang as well. But I figured it out and then I noticed the Apple forum had a fix that I already done on my own.

This is the part we you and I disagree. Since the update was Apple and could be any device maker I don't call Verizon for tech support

You should fix the update quirks on your own through the device maker. I don't expect tech support from Verizon for any update I accept. By the way my phone made and received calls, the data worked and texting worked.

HTC does testing even without Verizon or any carrier for that matter.... Apple regardless of they force carriers to join or not still takes a long time. Like I told you a billion times by now. What Apple is doing is a placebo effect. All devices are not ready at the same time. They wait until all is done and push out the update. If you joined the ADC and actually follow Tue change logs you will see it.

So in essence you want to get the update when everyone else gets it. So maybe manufacturers should withhold updates like Apple and push them at the same time. So if you want manufacturers to be more like Apple be prepared. $99 a year to beta test and you wait for updates until Apple is good and ready to give it to you.

Obviously, otherwise they might have a clue as to how much their update process really sucks!

As I told the Senior Lead Tech Support executive who called me yesterday, just because AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile or any other carrier isn't willing to extend pre-testing to manufacturers, doesn't prevent Verizon from making that first step.  If Verizon would extend this "Apple-esk" pre-release pretesting to Microsoft, Samsung, HTC, Googe, etc I'm quite sure these manufacturers would be more than willing to work with them.  And if Verizon takes the first step, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile might just follow suit, but Verizon would always be able to claim they opened that gate first.

No carrier doesn't need to do this... the manufacturer can do this on their OWN.  Proof of concept.  You don't need carriers to do anything.  Carriers have less power than you THINK they do.  Pre-testing is nothing more than a beta program is.  They CAN do it on their own, but they choose not to.  Basically we want carriers to fit the bill so they don't have to.  They want the carriers to take the brunt of the blame.

HTC - Beta program

(This is invite only, and they take a handful of people and they also beta test devices, and updates on various carriers).  No carrier involvement.  I had invites, but I passed them all out already for this year.

"Since the update was Apple and could be any device maker I don't call Verizon for tech support."

And I ask "why not?"   As part of my monthly service agreement, I PAY for Tech Support.  You may CHOOSE not to call Verizon Tech Support, but that does not mean others should follow suit.  Verizon may be the quickest way to find a solution to a technical issue with the device, despite if they support the device or can do anything about it.  Verizon may have internal knowledge of a technical issue told only to them from Apple.  Or they may some problem on their network that might be causing your device not to work.  There may be an issue with your SIM card, or your account isn't set up correctly to allow your device to ring.

Just because Apple makes the device and Verizon may or may not test anything or change anything, doesn't mean Verizon is 100% free of any fault for your device not working correctly.  It may have nothing to do with your device, so why wouldn't I call Verizon first?  That's what I'm paying for.

If, as you say, the issue isn't caused by anything Verizon has control over (i.e., network, SIM, account, etc.), then Verizon is more than capable of referring the customer to the manufacturer, again, part of their job.

I can sympathize with the Verizon Tech Support personnel for the fact that they must endure thousands of complaints each day, some of which can be quite frustrating, but that is their job.  I deal with the same "complaints" each day as part of my job with the Federal Government.  If I can do it, so should they.  I'm quite sure they don't need you online here each day telling people to "stop complaining to Verizon."

Manufacturers can BETA test the software on their device, this is true.  Microsoft has been doing it since Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview.  However this applies ONLY to the operating system, not the firmware, and this is where you are wrong.  All carriers DEMAND they be able to test firmware updates before it is 'allowed' to be released OTA.  I have already confirmed this with Verizon Corporate.  They admitted it to me..."We test the firmware to ensure any changes to the hardware of your device does not cause problems on the network.  If we allow a change on a Windows device and it causes problems on the network, that would not be fair to the Android or Apple users on our network.  We will never allow a release of firmware on our network until we can ensure it will not cause problems for other users."

HTC and Motorola are following suit behind Microsoft with the Developer Preview program, but none of them would be able to push out a FIRMWARE update without the authority of the carriers.  If Microsoft were to bypass the carriers testing and release a firmware update that caused network issues on any of the carriers, Microsoft could be sued by the carrier for damaging their network.  Even Apple has to have their firmware changes tested before it is released, it's just that Apple is allowed (because of the power they possess) to "pre-test" the firmware before they announce an iOS update.  I'm saying all the manufacturers should be granted this same "pre-testing of firmware" as Apple.
