I posted something in the 822 community (https://community.verizonwireless.com/message/1052083#1052083) I'll take as rumor, but the sounds of it that VZW isn't going to release Black for the 822....
Personally if VZW is selling the device in there own online store (http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedP...) it's not EoL and they need to support it.
I wonder why that is I guess I let my friend use my developer account but she would only get GDR3 and since black is required for 8.1 she will be at the end of the line.

EOL = end of life, no longer supported.
I'm not eligible for an upgrade either, but I pretty consistently eBay my current model for around half the cost of the new one every year. I'll take this opportunity to warn everyone to stay FAR AWAY from that "Verizon Edge" crap, that is a complete ripoff. It's like taking a high interest loan out on a new device and paying your built-in subsidy cost ON TOP of it.
As of today (Feb 14, 2014) I have officially received ALL of the updates (Windows Phone 8.0, Update 3, Nokia Black firmware update, Nokia Beamer, Nokia Storyteller and all the amenities that come along with this update. I am VERY HAPPY to have these updates and am extremely enjoying my Windows Phone experience once again. Thanks to Verizon and Nokia for not extending this delay any further. My phone is working perfectly with no problems. In fact, I believe the firmware update must have done something as the phone seems to work a little smoother, especially in the fluidity of the screen movements. It's actually smoother than my old iPhone (which I still have so I can use some apps that haven't made it to the Windows Phone store yet).
Having said all that, my initial complaint has not yet been addressed. I would like Verizon to inform us customers (who pay their salaries), why they REFUSE to provide us with the simplest of feedback regarding the status of these updates. We are not asking for a "play-by-play" update. A simple web page link on the Verizon Support website that we can click on to get information regarding updates for our phones. An example: "Nokia Lumia 928 - expected update in 3rd QTR 2014." or "Nokia Lumia Icon - update delayed due to error found in update - delayed until 4th QTR 2015." This would go a LONG, LONG way with us customers and would make update periods a lot less stressful for everyone! Please pass this on to the highest levels in Corporate because if this practice of keeping us in the dark continues, I'm afraid more and more customers will decide to leave Verizon for another carrier. I am one such person.
I've lost track of the number of times I spoke with executive assistants voicing concerns about communications to their customers about the lack of software update statuses and said the same thing; quarterly time frames is more than adequate. Even if those dates slip posting a blanketed update that unforeseen issues is forcing us to push the date back isn't an issue...
It's all about the money; who cares what the customer wants. Though if AT&T, Sprint or T-Mobile do it then VZW caves in and follows.
Sad business if all you do is follow others instead of being the pioneer.

I understand how important it is to stay on top of the software updates on your Lumia 928. The update released is not yet available for the 822; I can confirm your friend's phone is up to date as long as it's on software number 3045.0000.1328.1031. If an update becomes available, she will be notified.

Yes she got the amber and GDR2 update when my phone got them which was around August or September I believe.
What is the difference between the 822 and the 928? Other than design they seem lime the same phone.
