I asked a store manager about this a few weeks ago.  Here's the basic overview of what I was told:

  1. If you get a "free" phone and sign up for a new two year contract, you forfeit your grandfathered plan.
  2. If you get any phone that's 4G, even if you buy it yourself, you forfeit your grandfathered plan.
  3. In the next year (2013,) if you make any changes to your plan, you forfeit your grandfathered plan.
  4. By mid 2013  (or maybe as late as early 2014,) they will be going through and finding all of the old unlimited data contracts still in place and force people to go to new contracts. (Remember, they're all month-to-month, so they can be cancelled at any time by either party.)

Of course, that manager may have had their facts wrong or plans could change based on the competition.

2 is certainly wrong, as has been reported before.  For now, all that matters is whether you accept a subsidy.  Going 3g-4g,3g-3g,4g-4g are all treated the same

4) May possibly be true eventually (except as you say there are no CONTRACTS, if they are month-to-month, they just announce that that either contracts are now required, or discontinue the unlimited month to month option)

Once you go to get a new phone with a 2 year contract, they will force you to get one of the new shared data plans, only way to keep unlimted is to buy the phone outright. Also you can not upgrade to 4g without lossing your unlimited data.

Not entirely true.  If you get a subsidized phone (i.e., sign a new two-year contract), you will use your unlimited data and have to choose between adding a tiered data package (i.e., $30 for 2 gb of data) to that phone or switch the account to a Share Everything plan.  Doesn't matter if you are upgrading to a 3g or 4g phone.  And you can keep your unlimited (at least for now) if you pay full retail price for the phone or buy it from someplace like ebay (some people also are using upgrades on other lines on their account; lots of threads about this on this forum).

Not sure that there is such a thing as a "free" phone anymore, particularly with the $30 upgrade fee.  So # 1 is not quite right.  It should probably say that if you upgrade by getting a subsidized phone (i.e., signing a new two-year contract), you will lose your unlimited data.

Yep, # 2 is incorrect.

# 3 is incorrect to my knowledge.  I haven't seen anything along those lines anywhere.

Actually #4 could be done at any time.  Data is not part of the contract, so unlimited could be canceled at any time.  There are a number of threads about this on this forum.

I knew that I had a grandfathered plan, and felt safe for a while. Didnt look at much detail because I had no thought of getting a new phone any time soon and wasnt due to Upgrade.

I will not buy a phone at full price just to  keep the plan. I dont have the kind of money around to throw at a phone. So at this point, I think im pretty close to have made up my mind, that I will no longer be a Verizon customer come November when ATT gets the 920. Unless of course, Verizon pulls their heads from the rear by then, which isnt likely

If you want the 920 (and AT&T service is good where you will use it) that sounds like a reasonable plan.  Of course, you won't get unlimited data either.  But you may want to contact them now.  Some people have reported that AT&T will "match" Verizon customers with unlimited service who switch, but I don't know if that is a) true, and b) if so, if it is up to the discretion of an agent.   (If you are able to do this, things would be good, because currently AT&T also allows existing unlimited users to upgrade and keep unlimited.)

But of course be sure that the signal will be adequate!

Don't expect Verizon to "pull their heads from the rear", the major carriers are all moving in this direction as unlimited data for all isn't sustainable without endless major infrastructure/spectrum investment.  And then customers would complain about the price.

The heads from the rear part is more concerning how they dont appear to want the 920. Like it or not, it rivals the Iphone and is better in some ways even.

I actually have to use a Network Extender where I live. And that may be the case with ATT as well. So it really doesnt matter much signal wise.

If you guys notice.. how often does Verizon ever say they will have a device. When they do it's usually 30 days before it does launch. Also the 920 is exclusive to ATT right now.

How often?  When it's the first time they get an Apple, or when it's a really big announcement Android.

A friend of mine who bought his iphone outright, said he gets 4g were it is available.  So if you buy a phone a full price and get it activated you should sill have your unlimited data and 4g.
