10 year Verizon customer gives up...

I waited and waited and waited but I finally gave up... and switched from Verizon to AT&T. It was a painful decision. I'm no fan of AT&T. In fact, I had them for Internet and TV and booted them last year and am much happier.

I'm not a Microsoft lover either, but like many business people, OFFICE is integral to my work. So, I wanted a phone with OFFICE on it. I also was interested in trying a new and different interface as I didn't like Android and the iPhone, while it's very good, just seems a little dated now. The METRO interface in Windows Phone 7.5 (which will also be the interface in Windows8) looked interesting. I also wanted to upgrade to a current technology phone... and the Nokia Lumia 900 seemed like a good choice. It's getting generally positive reviews... although I would have considered new phones from HTC or Samsung as well... IF Verizon supported them on Windows Phone. BUT THEY DON'T. I waited 6 months... thinking, well Verizon eventually has to make a better Windows Phone available than the obsolete HTC Trophy ... I mean after all, AT&T does ... T-Mobile does ... Sprint does... but Verizon arrogantly and stubbornly DOES NOT and doesn't seem to have any plans to remedy the situation.

I don't know what the problem is between Verizon and Microsoft. You don't have to love MSFT. Who does? Just work with them for goodness sake and let us users decide which Phone software we like best. Seems like such a no-brainer.

BTW, I've had the Lumia for a month now. It's a very good phone, although the criticism of the camera picture quality is valid. But in every other aspect I like the phone a lot, and the METRO interface is great. The tiles might not be pretty if you've gotten used to having lots of colorful little pictures and icons all over the screen of your phone, but it's damn useful. For small screen/touch operated devices it's simply a better mousetrap. It's fast, it's intuitive, it's easy to manipulate with fingers and thumbs. The live updates are cool and it's really easy to customize without resorting to unnatural acts... the polar opposite of Android. As far as APPs go, I've had no problem finding just about anything I wanted and far more than I need.

I think Verizon is really missing the boat here...

most people use google docs these days, it gives most of the comparability..

The trophy wouldn't have worked? I agree though, the nokia phone looks pretty nice

I agree with you. But as a 10-year customer, surely you know that Verizon has never had a good selection of phones, compared with other big carriers. Just look at their Android phones. Most of them look identical -- basic black. The selection is awful, even for Verizon, which has always been a follower, not a leader. Even their feature-phone selection is worse than other carriers. The best thing about Verizon is their coverage.

While I too have an Android phone, I'm ready to move on to a Windows phone. Android was OK, but I'm weary of the Windows 3.1 look, with screens of icons. And the "Google Play" market is mostly a huge repository of sophomoric, poorly-designed junk that serves no real purpose for anyone over the age of 12.

But I can wait till the holidays when the Windows 8 phones are "supposed" to hit Verizon. I'm not interested in a Windows 7 phone at this point, hence my willingness to wait.

But if the new Windows phones don't show up here, I'm gone.

I feel your pain and have been contemplating jumping to AT&T for the Lumia being I have an HTC Touch Pro 2 that's been up for renewal for over a year now I've decided to hold out till the end of the year and see what Windows Phone 8 brings.  If AT&T comes out with a flagship Nokia Windows Phone 8 device before VZW I'm heading over to AT&T.  Plus VZW is dumpimg grandfathered unlimited data plans so there is nothing holding me to VZW anymore; I don't want to pay full price of a device to get UD.

VZW is known not to jump into the proverbial waters with new platforms without see what happens with other carriers first.  With the success with the Lumia range and the subsequent news that VZW shown some promise with Windows Phone 8 devices there is some hope.

Exactly.

And if you haven't by now tried out Skydrive's PC and other Mobile apps along w/ Office Online, you're severely missing out.

Given Verizon's Netflix-like bungling, with their ill-considered and poorly timed $30 "upgrade" fee and their refusal to honor their former committment to offer unlimited data on a go-forward basis for those of us who currently have it, there is little reason to remain loyal to this company. Hence, I will remain to see if they do indeed offer a decent Windows Phone 8 selection by the holidays. But if they don't, or it's the same limited and crappy selection they offer on their other phones, I will dump Verizon like yesterday's garbage and give AT&T a try. I would have never considered that 3 months ago, but with their gouging of long-time customers, I have zero loyalty to Verizon now.

It's comes down to the lesser of two evils.  AT&T is no angel either to gouging their customers and they charge $35+ for upgrading your phone; so VZW is still cheaper and you can avoid the $30 surcharge if you buy the phone through 3rd party resellers like Amazon.
