I have an iPhone based in the US but got it unlocked and now using in the UK for prolonged travel with a UK-based SIM card. I would like to suspend service on my phone's US line so I don't have to pay those monthly charges until returning home. Can anyone confirm that this won't deactivate the phone and make it stop working?

I hope your enjoying your time in the UK. I can understand not wanting to pay for unnecessary charges.
A suspend towards your Verizon Wireless account will not due harm to your UK SIM card nor cause harm to your device while overseas.
