data plan

Verizon now requires a mandatory $9.99 or higher data plan on any phone except the simple feature phones.  so,even though we do not use the internet on our phones (it is even blocked), we cannot own a phone like the env3 without paying for the data plan?  This is not right!  They should let the individual decide if they want the internet and then charge only those who do want and use it!  This is discouraging, we have been faithful verizon customers for over 10 years, but now will be switching to another carrier.  We cannot afford a higher bill.

It's being suggested by a Verizon employee on another website to take a few minutes to politely and constructively criticize this new data plan requirement at Verizon's survey website:

http://www.verizonwirelesssurvey.com

This person claims that the numerical and written reviews from customers are taken very seriously ... so seriously that when customers leave a low numerical review a Verizon supervisor telephones that customer to learn more about why that customer gave such a low review.

I emphasize the words "politely" and "constructively" because a few people on here have resorted to using cuss words. If enough people use cuss words in their reviews, then Verizon could just decide to dismiss all the criticism as coming from a bunch of disgruntled nutjobs.

You could also try sending a letter of complain or an email to the FCC like this person did named SoonToBeX:

Verizon does not require a data plan on the LG envy 3, because my daughter's both have them, and have no data plan.  Having said that, I was told that I had to have a data plan for my LG envy touch, which I purchased, and then found out my daughter's friend has the same phone with no data plan........ go figure!

I have a possible explanation.

Regarding the enV3, it's been said that people who purchased and activated an enV3 prior to January 18th were exempted from having to have a data plan.

And it was supposed to be the case that people who purchased an enV3 prior to January 18th but activated the enV3 post January 18th were exempted from having to have a data plan; but that has not been the case for some people.

Regarding the enV Touch, on or after approximately November 8th of 2009 people who purchased an enV Touch were required to add on a data plan.

It's been said by one employee that prior to January 18th that maybe there was a loophole that existed temporarily that if you had a data block on your account that you were able to purchase an enV Touch without being required to have a data plan.

Furthermore, prior to January 18th there were calling plans called Nationwide Connect and Nationwide Premium. If you were on one of those calling plans, then you did not have to have a data plan for the enV Touch and the Samsung Rogue.

Just a clarification - the Connect and Premium Nationwide plans ARE (WERE) unlimited data plans - which are no longer available. So the Rogue and EnvTouch could be on the Connect or Premium unlimited data plan - and if they were not, you added the $9.99/25 MB plan, and there was also (briefly) a $19.99 for 25-75MB usage plan.  Either way, the data plan was required.

The unlimited plan is now $29.99 in addition to whatever calling and/or texting plan you have, and the $9.99 for 25 MB is now the minimum data requirement for many of the "multi-media enhanced" phones.

I agree, some people buy a "phone" to talk. and don't want to have a $200.00/ month bill for that. I bought a more expensive phone because in my job I need the durability that it has, but I don't need all of this extra stuff. If I want internet, I'll use my laptop.

I do not think changing companies will help win this battle though.

SHAME ON YOU VERIZON!! You need to listen to your own announcements while on hold. If your customers are #1, why are you forcing us to purchase a $9.99 data plan, which we do not want or need, when we want to purchase a decent phone? The "simple" phones are pretty low quality. Why did all of the "3G" phones suddenly have to have a mandated data plan? Why can't we, the customer, make the decision? Could it be Verizon just wants to stuff it own pockets? If I did not already have a two year commitment  I would be looking for a new company now. I do have a long memory. When my commitment is up I will definitely look for another company!!

That's me but I bought the Alias 2.  Purchased before the 18th, advertised online that the phone did not require data plus I recieved a flyer showing it only had to have 2yr agreement and a nationwide calling plan,  that is why I go it so I could have the qwery keyboard, but activated it after the 18th so now I am forced to have the plan.  The way I see it, if I bought it that way they should honor the advertisment I recieved in the mail that made me pick it out.  I was told by one rep that they did this because the phones performance won't work as well without them.  Your kidding, but it would work without it on the 17th, why not the 18th?
