Which phone are you considering?  For the most part, AT&T phones are not compatible.

HTC that my sister has.  My 83 yr old mother is on my plan and the iphone I bought her was stolen and the HTC is an extra one that isn't being used but is on AT&T.

Saying it is an HTC phone means nothing. HTC makes a lot of phones. Some will work on Verizon. Some will not. Check the following site to see if your phone is compatible.
