I agree, I will be out of contract this year, after being told I would keep my unlimited data, no problem as long as I keep a smart phone.
And for the duration of your current contract, that has been the case. Once it expires, you can either continue month to month on the same terms (unlimited data), or sign a new contract, and those terms will be different. If you want to get a discounted phone from Verizon or one of it's authorized vendors, you will sign a NEW contract that will not include unlimited data.
Cell phone plans, capabilities and usage has changed drastically since you signed your last contract, yet you are still under the same terms and will remain so unless YOU make a change. That change is up to you.

When I considered the ramifications of going to the Share the Wallet plan. Just paying outright for a phone is more economical that taking tiered data even with my 20% discount. That and the Share the wallet plan would cost me about $20 more a month and I would get less.
