I used a lot more data (usually around 2-3 GB, but this time nearly 6 GB) on my Galaxy S4 last month and according to the phone data usage, more than half of the data was Background Data in the Verizon Messaging App. Why is this and how can I control it?

Could be Glimpse, the GPS portion of the app that tracks you and lets others know your location, and based on Location settings in the phones main menu, you could have a High Accuracy option using GPS, Networks, and WiFi to better locate you and use more data. You can opt out in the VM+ app settings.

Would Glimpse run in the background if I never actually click on the icon, or attempt to use it? I've seen the icon pop-up during text conversations but I don't use it.

It's possible. I might uninstall the app, then reinstall. Or, clear the app's cache. It could be a hangup in a newer version that didn't install correctly over the old version. I have noticed more posts than usual lately involving VM+.

I have had the Galaxy series for a while, go into Settings>Data Usage> scroll down to the list of apps using data and find the app using the background data. Select it then check the box that restricts the background data.

In doing so, wouldn't MMS NOT be auto downloaded in the background in the VM+ app?

That i'm not sure of. I still get updates (not notifications) for facebook when that is restricted. I only see a number on the facebook icon but all notifications are turned off. you will atill get the notification that you have a new text but may have to hit a download button to get the attachment if the VM+ has the background restricted.
