No. Basic phones do not have tethering/mobile hotspot capabilities.

If that's the case - that none offered by verizon to to replace an old razr 2 v9m that i currently use (I'm pretty sure it would be considered a basic phone even though it cost so much when introduced) - then the verizon customer service is telling me to change devices to one that they don't offer anyway to keep my current plan. I guess to get an answer from someone at verizon - I need to re-ask the question - "why would verizon customer service tell me I needed to get a product they don't carry to keep my current plan'?

they are simply telling you that to keep your current plan, you need a basic phone. i'm guessing they never told you that you would be able to tether with the current basic phones? to be honest, i had no idea that any basic phone was ever capable of tethering? if you can tether with a $40 plan, i wouldn't do anything to mess with that. keep your phone and plan in place. if your phone is shot, find the exact same model on ebay and buy it and activate it. have you ever actually tethered the razr and used any data? i can't believe you could do that without incurring additional charges. i may be wrong, but if you can, DON'T touch that plan because you'll never find anything like it with verizon. if you buy a new phone capable of tethering, they will force you to purchase a new data plan.

My phone isn't shot, in fact I have another in new condition in case it died but when they made them - apparently they're made to work forever - can't say that about a lot of newer products - but it doesn't have the features of more modern smartphones and all the built in apps - but for my usage always worked great. Kind of a shame I'll have to throw then in a drawer now. As for my plan - I have an old alltel plan and they're doing away with the alltel data network (end of March) to save costs since they now own most of alltel and have for several years now. I think you're right - I'll just go on ebay and buy the exact same phone that's verizon branded.

If you want a phone with smartphone features you will need to get a smartphone.

I already have a smartphone with a different carrier that I'm happy with and at a better price.  In addition - as I mentioned - I'm happy with the other phone I use for verizon also - it's solid and reliable - but because it's not verizon branded am looking at other basic phone options. I don't care about  renuing contracts if the service works - I keep it for decades anyway. Don't care about paying cash for a phone if it's required to keep a plan I'm happy with even if I seldom use it because eventually I'm saving money, but have never liked paying more than I have to for anything or buying something with features I know i'd likely never use. Verizon aught to send me Christmas cards since I'm the perfect customer for their profitability - I pay for years for services I seldom use, haven't made a call or sent a text in months with their services so it's like free money to them. Your welcome verizon - we'll see if you can keep my business in a couple weeks as long as there are no surprises when I replace my current phone and which of your conflicting customers service information turns out to be true.

First off id like to mention that this is a peer to peer forum and you are not talking to customer service here. To answer your question, the basic phones browser is not made for tethering via hardwire or Bluetooth. Second of all even if you replaced your phone with one all tel or Verizon, all tel data is going away. So yeah you'll still have the plan, but in order to use data or tether you will need to migrate to Verizon plans and pricing. So the recommendation to get a USB dongle is spot on.

Also not sure on your threat on Verizon keeping your business, and no doubt it wasn't your fault that all tel was purchased, but with mergers things change if you want to continue doing business. Switching carriers just to keep a number for back up or expecting to get what you want here is not an option....or should I say a wise one. So port your number to another prepaid carrier that allows tethering or get the dongle seeing as how you don't make calls or text on that number anyway.

So the motorola razr2 v9m is not a basic phone and is a smartphone?

It is considered a basic phone in today's terms. When it came out it was advanced for its time, maybe even considered a multimedia device, but its not a smartphone. I actually liked that phone but it was pricy back then.
