Verizon Wireless Discount Rip-Off

I've read some other threads with folks conjecturing about how Corporate Discounts will be applied....but I've checked it out now that the new Shared Data Plans are in effect (and have realized I would've been better off sticking with an OLD plan when I had the chance about a week ago).

As a new VW (Verizon Wireless) customer as of July 1, 2012...I signed up expecting a 20% discount off my bill as a government employee (as I was told in the store would be applied).

It turns out the 20% discount is only off of the DATA portion of your bill....ie: the $50 charge ofr a Gig of Data will only cost you $40.

HOWEVER, the charges for the phone lines on your account ($40 for a smartphone and $30 for a "dumb" phone) are not subject to discount and will be billed as $40 and $30.

What a hideous rip-off. I knew I should've gone to AT&T last week when I was not tied to any contract and taken their 15% government discount...would've been a much better deal for me.

Beware before signing up for a VW account.

That's ridiculous.

Are you still within your return window?  If so, return the phone and port your number to another provider.

It's a ripoff how they code billing? New one to me

Verizon has never given discounts off the whole bill even under old pricing. For example we get a 20% discount. On the old pricing you got it on the first line and and the unlimited texting. Nothing off of data on any lines. So we had 4 lines 700 minute plan unlimited texting. First line is $60 so 20% off that. Unlimited texting is $30 20% off that. The other 3 lines no discount. Four $30 data plans no discount. So out of $240 dollars only $90 of it is subject to 20% discount.

Some people will save more if the discount was on the lines. Some would save more if it's on the data side. Just depends. A single line would save more by getting 20% of of $50 data than $40 line fee. They would save even more if they got more than 1 GB of data.

Also you had a chance to compare old pans with new plans. I has been confirmed WELL before June 28th that the discount only applied to data. Don't blame Verizon for your lack of homework. Go with at&t they too will soon be going to Share plans so good luck.

I too agree that it is a complete rip off.  Right now I'm receiving 20% off my family share plan but each additional line is only $9.99.  If I want to switch to the new More Everything plan the only discount I'll receive is 20% off the data.  We have 4 basic phones so the data needed is only $15 per month.  A whopping $3 discount.  How is that worth it?  My contracts expire in October.  I will be switching.

You aren't required to switch to the More Everything Plans. If the Nationwide Plan works for you and your family, keep it for as long as you want.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
