Verizon CEO says he's open to dropping contracts

I figured I would start a thread/discussion in reference to the Verizon CEO, Lowell McAdams, saying "that he likes it when something different is tried in the industry."  Link to news story here:  http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57577842-94/verizon-ceo-says-hes-open-to-dropping-contracts/

He says that consumers need to ask for the change if we want it.  This is because T-Mobile has decided to get rid of contracts and offer unlimited everything plans.  All plans offer unlimited Talk & Text.  Data coverage as follows:

  1. 500MB Plan:  First Line $50, Second line $30, each addtional $10 - Includes up to 500 MB of high-speed data (after which you are then throttled)
  2. 2GB Plan:  First Line $50, Second line $30, each addtional $10 - Addtional $10 per line added for 2GB of data.  Includes up to 2GB of high-speed data (after which you are then throttled)
  3. Unlimited Plan:  First Line $50, Second line $30, each addtional $10 - Addtional $20 per line added for unlimited data.  Includes up to unlimited high-speed data (no slowed speeds, also Includes up to 500 MB of Smartphone Mobile HotSpot with additional data for tethering sold separately)

These plans are awesome!! I currently pay $190 after taxes and after employment discounts for 3 lines with only 2 with data.  I would save at least $30 a month without any employment discounts per month, more with them included.

I for one enjoy my Verizon service (the network) it works pretty much any where in the USA with little to no service connection loss.

But with these new plans and the ability to bring any phone I want, this is looking very appealing.  T-Mobile has done away with phone discounts, will allow customers to "finance" the price of a new phone or allows them to bring any GSM (unlocked) phone at anytime on their network.  This to say the least is amazing.

PLEASE VERIZON WIRELESS CUSTOMERS LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD AND GET THIS PLAN BROUGHT OVER TO VERIZON!!!!

Simply state The change you would like Verizon to make to plans (no contract offerings).

UPDATE :  Sign this petition - https://www.change.org/petitions/verizon-get-rid-of-contracts-for-wireless-service

PLEASE REPLY AFTER VIEWING.  THIS WILL NOT WORK IF PEOPLE DO NOT REPLY AFTER VIEWING.

Thank you all for your consideration in this matter.  Let's see how well Verizon "listens" to its customers.

2 Gig plan is $60, unlimited is $70, not $50 &50 as you have stated. In the non-corporate retailers, they still have contract plans that are a bit more expensive at $60 for 500 meg, $80 for 2 Gig, and $90 for unlimited. But I'm thinking if you don't choose to upgrade under a new contract you can switch to the non-contract plans at the end of your contract term.

I agree these prices are much more reasonable than Verizon's $90 for 1 Gig or worse under their SEP. I would like to see Verizon do either of 2 things:

1 Adopt comparable plans to these T-mobile options, both contract and non-contract. The probllem with current contract models is the bill doesn' t go DOWN once the subsidy is paid off.  They don't under the assumption people are gong to renew after the end of 2 years.

2 Bring the SEP pricing in line with T-mobile's. This can easily be done by eliminating the "Access Fee" for the FIRST phone on the account.  Under this model, phones would be purchased up front.

I would like the new no contract plans offered at T-Mobile to also be offer here at Verizon as well.

The plan for the first line is only $50.  There are add-ons per line of $10 (2GB data plan) & $20 (unlimited data plan), respectively.  I separated the pricing the same way T-Mobile would, as there are price points (MRN) for each service, for each line, for data, insurance, etc.  Each are different services which are charged separately.

The point of this thread/discussion is to alert Verizon to our, the customer's, desire for off contract plans to be made available to us.

Please share this post with family and friends who are current Verizon customers and have them reply to it Simply stating -  "I would like the new no contract plans offered at T-Mobile to also be offer here at Verizon as well."

This way the message is clear and by the number of responses they (Verizon & its CEO Lowell McAdams) will be able to see what we want, in their own forums at that.

Thank you all.

It will be interesting to see how people feel about paying full retail price for the phones if that happened. I am sure they will start taking better care of them, when they realize that 99.00 phone will now cost them 500.00..(LOL)

Pricing for phones aren't that bad.  With the current trend of good, powerful phones being made but with reasonable price points.  Its a win win for everyone.

The Nexus 4 ($299/$349) shows that a good quality phone can be made without it costing too much.  Many other manufacturers are going to have to follow suit, if they want to still rake in profits or run the risk of becoming HTC.

Most people if the stop and do the math will not mind forking over $200-$400 for a new phone if they see that what they "lose" in subsidiaries the gain in MRCs.  Getting a discount on a new phone (which a lot of them aren't even discounts at all, many phones are displayed very overpriced which most companies claim to then offer these massive discounts to sign a new contract) which is usually about $150-250 off.  A lot more can be saved in overages alone(data, text or minute) per 1-year/2-year contract.

Even so, T-mobile offers customers the ability to bring their own phone.  There are plenty of authorized 3rd party dealers who sell the phone you want for a fraction of the price.  Its all about being an informed consumer.

First off, this is a peer to peer community forum where customers can assist other customers with their questions by giving them advice and suggestions.

Second, you can't post the exact same message over and over again on this community. It would be viewed as duplicate flooding post and against the here.

And third, be very careful about what you are asking for. For the past few years, there were customers on here asking for a plan where they could share their data plan with multiple people. Those plans are now available, but they aren't exactly what those original requester had imagined they would be structured. So what I'm saying is, you might get what you want some day, but you don't like how it works on for you.

You don't have to have a contract now. Just plan on purchasing your device at full price.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

T-mobile requires you pay full price for a phone. At Verizon you can already pay full price for a phone without having to sign a contract.

With all the people complaining on this forum about a lousy $30 upgrade fee, I'm sure they would love to pay full retail price for their new phones.  It appears a large percentage of Verizon customers can't even pay their bills in full and on time every month.  The only way they can even afford a phone is with the huge discount they get by signing a 2 year contract.  Do away with contracts and you will price them out of the market unless Verizon wants to start financing phones.  In that case, you're right back to contracts.  It won't work except for people with plenty of money.
