If I upgrade my phone in South Dakota would I still be able to use it in Michigan once I move to Michigan in two months?

Yes. You will still have your South Dakota number, but almost everyone has free domestic long distance these days so it doesn't matter much. If you want, once you get to Michigan, you can login to My Verizon and change your phone number to a local number for free. It is not required you switch the number.
