If I have to pay as much for unlimited data on my phone as I do for my house, perhaps I will just cancel my Comcast service and let Verizon cover my 100+ GB per month network requirements.

With the 3G EDVO only smartphones, the mobile hotspot feature was $20 or $30 per month for 2 GB of tethering when added to the 3G smartphone unlimited data plan. When the 4G LTE smartphones were added in 2011, the mobile hotspot feature was free for a few months as a promotion while Verizon Wireless tried to figure out how to tell what was smartphone data and what was tethering data. Eventually they announced in a press release, the mobile hotspot feature price would be $30 per month for unlimited tethering data in conjunction with the $29.99 unlimited smartphone data plan. As far as I know that has been the price since. I have added and removed and added the mobile hotspot feature a couple of times over the years since I got my first 4G LTE smartphone in 2011.

When the individual tiered 3G/4G smartphone data plans were added in July 2011, they added the 2 GB tethering data option which was either $20 or $30 added to the regular tiered data plans.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Think about the whole unlimited tethering. People would be running their homes off of that for an additional $30. Instead of the $50 or so that a home connection costs.

They do!

Unfortunately these are also the same customers who spoil it for the rest of us. Many I've seen do this have the choice of Cable Internet or Fiber Optic as well. T-Mobile recently came out saying they were going to go after these customers, since they were seen doing 2TB+ a month of data, which is just insane on a mobile data network.

Those who I see having a legit need to run their home off of an unlimited mobile data plan have no other choice besides going with Satellite, or paying a couple thousand a month for a measly 1.5Mbps over T1. They can have the entire tower for all I care.

Agree that changing the data plan is bad business for Verizon.  Lost another customer.  Paid full price for my current phone in order to keep the data plan.  Sorry I did so now.  Lost my trust.  No matter how great your network may be, when you treat your customers poorly you will lose them.

the break down is simple. you know your out of contract if your still getting unlimited data. the new plans are as follows

$20 per smart phone out of contract +

$30 for 1 GB

$45 for 3 GB

$60 for 6 GB

$80 for 12GB

bottom line if your paying more than 60 for one line of service now and using less then 3GB you really need to switch.

Hope you know FCC can't force any company to not change their pricing.

What kind of phone you have, I might be interested in buying it.

If it's a grandfathered price, then it's a month-to-month contract and VZW has the right to change the price as long as they give us plenty of warning.  Now, if they change a price mid-contract, then that's a different story.

The only questionable thing is how much actual notice are they going to give. Nothing official has been said (to the best of my knowledge no notice on the website and no one has received a letter yet). As it stands, if November 15th is true they will be giving less than 30 days notice if people don't receive something by Friday.
