The New Data Plan Confusion

We have three phones with Verizon:

1) A plain vanilla 2G slider for my wife, who downloads/uploads nothing, and sends 2-3 texts monthly for an extra $5

2) My phone: Samsung Galaxy Nexus (prime account), 20 texts monthly ($5) and 2-3 gigs data, almost all being Google Maps while driving -- one year remains for unlimited data plan

3) For my son, 4G Droid X, 40 texts monthly ($5), half-a-gig data, some pix ul/dl -- contract ends mid-July 2012

Also, we have a 700 minute plan and went over only once, usually ending up with 550-650 minutes used.

Our current bill runs $ ~175

---------------------

Questions is about the son's smartphone.  If he holds onto the Droid X after mid-July, is he forced to go on the share-all data plan?

What is the outcome for my wife's account for which the contract ended several years ago?

Do I remain on the unlimited plan for the remaining year?

Seems to me that if we all went to the shared plan, our monthly cost would be $200+ since we typically hit 2.5 gigs of data, and therefore would be forced to go with the 4 gig plan.

Tried calling 611, but after a half-hour wait, nothing happening.  Would appreciate anyone's help.  Even though we have been Verizon wireless customers for ten years, have no qualms about switching carriers for a better deal.

Thanks!

Shared data plans aren't being forced.  You can keep your current plan (excluding unlimited data on the upgrading line) even when upgrading.  The only thing is that those who currently have unlimited data must select one of the line-based data tiers (2GB, 5GB or 10GB) if they upgrade and sign a new 2 yr contract.  Share Everything is just an additional option for those who see a benefit in having unlimited talk/text with shared data.

My son, whose Droid X contract ends mid-July, 2012 has no intention to upgrade his phone.  If he does not upgrade his phone, is he able to continue on our family plan with unlimited data?

--------------------------

I can see two scenarios:

1)  We continue with our plans as current:  one 2G phone, two 4G phones, 700 minutes, $5 each for 250 texts, and unlimited data for the two 4G phones.

2)  I continue to pay $45 for the primary account (with unlimited data for 18 months), while my wife and son go on the shared data plan paying $130 for a 2G and 4G phone with 2 gig data.

Is either one correct or is there a third option?

if you aren't looking to upgrade any of the phones, then just leave everything alone. when a contract runs out (like your son't line) it will just continue to be billed the same way it has been. there's no need for you to even mess with your contract if you aren't looking for a new phone.

If you went with the Family Share Everything plan:

$40 / month for your Nexus

$40 / month for the Droid X

$40 / month for the 2G slider (Not sure of what kind of phone)

$70 / month for 4GB of data

Total of $190, which is roughly $15 more per month than you are paying now. You lose your Unlimited Data on your Nexus, but you gain being able to upgrade your 2 smartphones through Verizon (Subsidized), plus unlimited calling and texting.

The only thing you didn't mention is how big is the data plan of your son's phone?

Is that worth the ~$15 / month more?

  As far as your questions:

About your son's phone, when his contract runs out, he could continue to go month to month with the same plan. If he wants to upgrade, it would depend on his data plan, but again, if it is the standard 2GB plan he can do the subsidized upgrade and keep his 2GB data plan, and everything stays the same.

Your wife's line is the same, it can be upgraded and keep the same data plan she currently has, provided it is not the Unlimited plan or the Double your data plan of 4GB.

Your line has the unlimited Data plan.  Your contract stays the same until you decide to make a change. That is when the decision on what to change needs to be made. You also could stay with the same phone and go month to month, or you could buy a phone somewhere else (eBay, Craigslist, or pay full price from Verizon or Amazon or somewhere like that) and activate it on the line and continue to go month to month. Some of the phones out there run $600-$700 dollars, and that is roughly $25 / month you would have to save. You could also do a subsidized upgrade through Verizon, but your unlimited data would be gone, and you would have the standard 2GB plan.

Did this help?

What does the Double Your Data Plan have to do with this?  It is not affected by upgrades like the unlimited data plan is (and by the way, there were other Double Your Data plans other than 4 GB).

Don't think it's been officially clarified one way or the other what will happen to those on the double data promotion. Believe the initial terms was that it lasted as long as you have an active 4G device and would carry over when you upgrade but who knows with Verizon "changing the game"

I agree ... it also is my understanding that the initial terms were that it lasted as long as you have an active 4G device and would carry over.  As of today, two CSRs have confirmed that that is still the situation, i.e., if you upgrade, you keep your data (4G, 10G, whatever the case may be).  Maybe we'll get lucky and a VZW rep will chime in here and confirm what I've been told twice on the phone.   The reason I mentioned that is the same reason you responded, I had an online CSR tell me that it would go away with the next subsidized upgrade along with the Unlimited plan because "It was just a promotion."
