Social security card fax requirement

I went into a Verizon store recently to open a new account. I am switching service after being with Sprint for over 15 years. In the process I was told I needed to fax a copy of my social security card. This is something I am not comfortable doing and don't understand the reason why.  I do not trust what will happen with that fax once it is received And don't like the idea of a fax copy floating around out there somewhere. I have very good credit and have NEVER been asked for a copy of my actual card before. I called customer service and was told the same thing and was not given any real good reasons why. I have talked with others who have recently signed up for verizon and they were not asked to fax their social security card. One of the biggest  recommendations for protecting you from identity theft is to keep your social security card secure. By faxing out a copy it is no longer secure. I understand giving the number in the application process but not the faxing of the actual document. Again I have good credit and just did my own credit check to see if there was anything that might cause an issue. It came back with nothing unusual.  I decided to switch to Verizon because it has the best data coverage in my area. BUT with Verizon forcing the faxing of a document that I don't feel comfortable sharing copies of I am very strongly considering AT&T. Has anyone else had this request and did you feel comfortable in faxing your card?

Well I tried again at the store and told them I would not send my SS card over a fax. They gave me this email adress, wsmnationalconsumercreditgroup@verizonwireless.com

I got a bounce back on the email. Does anyone know the correct email for the credit department??

I guess Verizon doesn't need new customers that bad. I have given up on trying to get any answers for the issues I posted above. I couldn't even get a response from a Verizon rep on this thread!

I went to an AT&T store and had NO problems signing up for their service. Their customer service was 100% better than anything I experienced trying to get new service with Verizon. And they didn't ask for me to fax sensitive documents anywhere.

Verizon you lost what would have been a good customer.

startingonthewrongfoot,

We certainly hope that we can change your view of us and get you set up with new service as soon as possible. You concern is understandable and we do want to assure you that your information is protected when faxing over the documents to our credit department. Were you able to reach the credit team over the phone to have them verify the email address again for you? This way you can try to send them an email while connected with someone to make sure it goes through. We do want to help you resolve this issue as soon as possible.

Every customer is a good customer. My account is no less important than yours. Hope you enjoy your AT&T service.

I tried to migrate from prepaid to postpaid due to deprioritization issues and was told by a very irritated customer service person to email my drivers license and social security card to an email address. I don't carry my social security card around with me and have never been asked for it. This is a Verizon only issue. I have an 830 credit score. This is a horrible business practice. I expected better than this when I signed up. They don't value their customers at all. Not a good company.

How is that a Verizon only issue when every postpaid carrier would require that?

A company doesn't care if your credit score is in the 800's -- it doesn't even know who you are.

If for any reason something gets flagged on an application (credit checks are automated), you get asked for further verification. You act as if this is some conspiracy theory.
