i assume you have to be "plugged in" to get all of that fantastic data? we pay for convenience. you state the lack of wifi availability and then point out how much data and speed you have available......via wifi? "most" of the population live in urban areas, where you can't walk one block without access to wifi. and i fell for what? kool aid? i have unlimited so i don't care.

I don't think the data plan costs are too bad, considering the price break as you get more. The bigger problem I have is the device charge of $40 / smartphone, and $30 for basic. If they brought that down in cost, I think it would be accepted better. Verizon has said that phones are data driven, so reduce the monthly cost of the device, and charge accordingly for data.

$30 for basic phones is cheaper than T-Mobile. For a smart phone they are the same price. I don't see that portion as bad the difference with even smaller regional carriers is $5 cheaper on basic phones and $5 more expensive than smartphones from those.

I can understand the data portion complaints, but with the past 2 years people were complaining about expensive $30 unlimited everything per smartphone and they weren't going to be using that data. The more smart phones you have the better it comes out. I switched as soon as it came and I save over a hundred a month. I added family members that rare even use the data in the first place and they saved around $20 each.

I and my other half are on the grandfathered unlimited and my mother has a 2GB @ 4GB price. Since all this started, I've been monitored data usage. I am ALWAYS online watching Netflix or listening to TunedIn Radio, but I am connected to wifi so I get a smooth connection. Husband barely uses his data and Mom (who is in another state) hasn't learned th joys of wifi is afraid to go online. Hence, on average, I use .5 GB, him about .03 GB and mom about .3 GB. As you see, not even a ful gig has been used, however, when I look on bill, it shows my mother using a full gigabyte. If I were to switch to this new plan and opted for the 2GB tier, how would it show? Would VZW say we went over by a gig and charge an extra $15? Overall, the new plans are more expensive for my needs with less 'perks'.

Yep lower the cost of smartphone to $30 a month and I'll switch to Share Everything TODAY. I mean isn't that what Verizon really wants, is for everyone to be on Share Everything? So ok Verizon give me a REASON to switch.

Yes, I must be "plugged in" to get that, but the WiFi I have available (through my own router) is irrelevant, and has nothing to do with the data/speeds that I have available on my home PC.  The fact that "most" of the population live where WiFi is available is also irrelevant to my point.  Do you actually think that the cost to provide data wirelessly is 2-3 times higher than the cost to provide it via hardwire all the way to my house?  No, it isn't.  I've worked in the utility industry for over 30 years, and I know better.  Yes, cell towers are not cheap, but a single tower serves thousands of customers at a single time.  Hardwired systems serve one!  My point is the escalating cost for data.  2GB used to cost $30, now it costs $50 for just 1GB.  That's progress?  What suddenly made that 1GB (or 2GB) any different?  Does making it available to be shared suddenly make it worth 300% more?  What has really changed?  We wanted reasonable data sharing to save money; what we got was a shell game with the exact same bottom line.

Again, Verizon was already making record profits even before they unveiled the "share everything" plans, and that profit was specifically coming from their data plans.  That is a metter of record, right out of Verizon executives' mouths.  THEN they roll out these plans, which they themselves have admitted are designed to maximize their profits from data.  So I guess that "record profits" still ain't enough; let's squeeze some more out of our customers.  And you support them doing it; that's the "kool-aid" (perhaps you're too young to understand the reference; google "Jim Jones").

Yes it is. There is more hardware involved. Also a lot of updated hardware. When was the last time you heard your ISP dropping 19M a year on infrastructure alone? Time warner cable spent 1M in Hawaii over 8 months ago and before that nothing for the past 7 years.

You also have to remember landlines do NOT have to purchase land or lease as well. Once the foundation it set there is nothing more to pay out unless you are upgrading the pipelines which doesn't happen yearly. Ever wonder why we lag behind on landline speeds? Our ISP have been hording the profits and don't bother upgrading their backbone unless absolutely necessary.

I'd actually would say the same thing. Verizon moved the profits from voice and text to data. They dropped their price on voice and text to be the same ball park as regional carriers which do not have roaming agreements and do not have a large network costs. One could even say they may take a loss on voice and text so they have to make money off the data. Has anyone ever thought of that?

Oh eventually we'll have nothing but data plans and everything goes over as data. They are prepping for it. It won't be much longer now. I saw this coming many years ago. I give it until they finish out LTE and transition to VoLTE is when we'll see it.
