You'll pay the full retail price. The only way to get the discounted pricing is by agreeing to a new contract, and keeping the line of service to two years. Buying it outright, or using EDGE to pay over time both result in paying full price.

I just spent over a hour on the phone with Verizon after they told my wife that I could upgrade my phone on 12/17/2014 now they are saying that I can't upgrade till the 20th and a supervisor was not able to come to the phone because she was in a meeting.... Honesty I kinda figured a customer is more important that a meeting....so I was not able to upgrade my phone and I waited over a hour on the phone just to be told no not for another 3 days...3 days!? That is not right

You can upgrade at full price at ANY time even if you're still under contract. If you want a discounted phone that requires a 2 year contract. If you don't want a contract you pay full price. Simple.

If it's an iconic device such as i6 you have to wait for upgrade date yeah. Nothing they could do there

So when we spent 2 hours in-store moving my line and my fiance's from our respective family plans and signing a new contract I could have just paid the $30 early upgrade fee and gotten the discount, but because I played by the rules and waited until my (now seemingly arbitrary) upgrade date I will pay $300-500 more for my phone?

Alberk - not real sure what you are saying.
- If you pay the $30 UPGRADE fee, it is because you have purchased a new device at a discount price on a new 2 year contract.
If you pay FULL RETAIL price, you can purchase ANY phone at ANY time - no contract required, no waiting for upgrade dates.
- The EDGE plan is another way to pay for phone, with payments spread over 24 months, plus get an additional monthly discount

it is whether you want a contract or not:
no contract, full price phone, but get $15 or $25 month2month discount every month
2 yr contract, subsidized phone, no monthly discount.
even though you pay more up front, no contract with monthly discount is cheaper over 2 years the buying the reduced price phone under contract If you have 10GB of data or more. Calculate the full 2 year costs before making a decision.
