Pre-ordering and porting number

I want to add a line and pre-order an iPhone 6 for it, but then port a Sprint number over to the new line.  Is this as easy as just pre-ordering the phone and then waiting?  I won't lose access to the old number while waiting for the new phone, right?

Verizon can assign you a temporary number for the new line, then port your Sprint number in on top of it once you are ready.
