Keeping up with the latest and greatest updates is great! You can refer to this website when software updates have been released: http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/software-updates/

Age old question with VZW. Windows Phone users have the same problem - other carriers released the updates long before VZW did. I think this is one of the reasons Microsoft, starting with Windows 10, is going to do direct updates and not let the carriers be the gatekeepers. I would suspect other OEMs will be doing the same soon.
Could you imagine our ISPs stopping us from updating our computers?

Actually it's not going to be that way. MS corrected their statement.

MS will still do the deal with carriers like usual. The only difference is they'll decide when to release the updates. They won't be using carrier FOTA servers, but their own. That's exactly the same thing the Nexus 6, and all iPhone do. People read it the wrong way and it was clarified a few weeks ago and some one posted links to the info in one of these threads.

No. Everyone is assuming they are bypassing the carriers which they are not. Carriers still have to approve the software before MS can push the update. Only difference is they come from their servers and not the carriers servers.
