Because of the changes with the data plans Verizon is trying to force their loyal customers off the unlimited data plan. Their first step to doing this is for all the customer that were GRANFATHERED to keep their unlimited data plans now have to pay FULL PRICE for a phone and no longer get the discounted price for a phone when they want to update their phone at the end of their contract. Recently my parents had to pay $600 for a DROID RAZR so they could keep their unlimited data plan. They were informed that this is only the first stage of trying to get customers off their unlimited data plan, and eventually Verizon was going to not allow customers to use a phone they didn't purchase thru them. In other words, a customer must purchase at the discounted price and can not purchase a full price phone from them to keep their plans. I do understand they are trying to reduce the bandwith out there, but there is no reason they should be punishing loyal customers. Starting to think it is time to start looking at another service provider!!!!

I've said it many times before, I'll say it again.
The $30 unlimited data plan price was set back, I believe, even before 3G speeds were widespread. Now that we have 4G speeds and you can consume considerably more data then when the $30 price was set, it is not unreasonable that Verizon is changing the way it charges for data. Thinking you should pay the same amount for data when today's data speeds are 50-100 times faster and therefore you can consume 50-100 times more is just not sensible. What kind of company, in any type of business, would give you that much more for the same price? There aren't any! If they did, they wouldn't be in business for long as they would go bankrupt!
The way I see it, Verizon had 2 options: go to a pay for what you use system which is what they currently have done, or to increase the price for unlimited data drastically. I personally prefer the former, to pay for what you use. That way if I don't want to pay for the data, I won't use that much. If you NEED that much data for whatever reason, Netflix, YouTube, etc..., then you should pay for it.

Well most who pay full price buy from VZW, so I am a little confused by your statement above

I assume the last sentence is the thought that one day Verizon will change the rules so that not even buying at full price will allow you to keep unlimited (and I think many of suspect that!). Presumably you can buy full price if you want to upgrade early, just as today.
