9.4 miles from a tower? You are either in a very sparsely populated area of the country or in a generally weak coverage of the Verizon Wireless network.
A signal can travel for 45 miles? The curvature of the earth would limit this distance even further. The furthest I have seen as a distance from the tower is 14 miles and it was a very poor signal.

With the tower being in an elevated position, about 22° from ground level to top of tower(line of sight). This tower should allow for ample signal strength, especially since it did for 3 years prior.
So why, other than failure from the cellular transponder sight, would the signal degrade with no other elements causing changes?
