How does a phone use data when you dont use the phone except as a phone?

I monitored my phone when my data planned flipped.  I have not touched my phone except to call out.  I have no apps that auto-update and I have not even texted since the new plan but I am showing data usage. How?

Which phone model do you have? Email usage?

Samsung Galaxy S5.  I have not checked email from my phone for days

Smartphones can consume data to perform background administrative tasks...such as backing up to the cloud.

Which activities are using the data? You can see your data usage through the phone settings.

Under Settings > Data Usage, what does the phone indicate is using the data?
