Family plan upgrade

My wife and I are eligible to upgrade to new phones at the end of this month. She knows she wants the iPhone 5, but I want to wait for the HTC M7 (or whatever they end up calling it). What I want to know is: Can she upgrade her phone when we become eligible and allow me to wait until my phone comes out, or do we both have to upgrade at the same time?

Each line has its own contract and contract end date, and thus its own upgrade eligibility date.  You don't have to upgrade once you become eligible.  So, if, by chance, both of your phones have the same upgrade eligibility date, your wife can ugrade her phone and you can wait however long you want to upgrade yours.
