My phone is due for an upgrade. Can I get the upgrade and give it to my son since he is not due till 2010?

Yes, but do the upgrade on your number. When you get the new phone, do the normal activation. After that is done, call Verizon and switch numbers on your phone and your son's phone.

You're right! The new phone will be activated with his number, so all he needs to do is get his son's number put on the new phone and put his number back on the phone that he was already using.

I am in a similar situation. I would prefer to order a phone online.
Can I just order the phone using the number that is due for the upgrade and then activate the phone on the desired number using the online activation tool? (I assume the contract extension, etc. will go with the number that performed the order.)
Also, is there a charge when activating a replacement phone?

When the phone arrives you willl need to activate it on the number that it was ordered from first. Not doing so can cause complications. Then once you have done that you can switch the phones.
No there is not a charge for activating a replacement phone.

Activated first on number ordered from. (Assume important due to acceptance of contract extension.) Then swapped everything around using the online activation. One phone required a couple of tries before the online activation took.
