Edge Plan Inquiry

Newbie

I have an existing 10GB family plan with 4 people and I'm thinking of getting on the Edge plan and getting the new iPhone.

2 people out of the plan want to Edge up for sure (one wants a 6 Plus and the other a regular iPhone 6), and both are eligible for upgrade.

1 person in the plan is not eligible for upgrade. However, are they able to Edge up as well and get a new phone, or must they wait until they are eligible?

Is it possible for the 2 mentioned above to Edge up or does everyone have to Edge up together? How will our family plan be affected?

Will the odd person out that is not eligible for upgrade still have the same monthly payment of around $66?

Those that Edge up, what will our new monthly bill be for the next 20 months and what will it look like afterwards? Also, do we have to surrender our old phones even though we own it?

I'm seeing a lot of people complaining or regretting signing up and I need some advise please before making the next step. Thank you in advance!

You do not all have to be on Edge. So the 2 eligible lines can be on Edge. Sometimes Verizon has promo where those under a year away form their contract ending can Edge up, but I do not believe that have that promo going on right now. So they will have to wait.

People regret signing up because they failed to study the program.

Anyway the Edge plan just changed today from 20 months to 24 months. This will actually lower your payments.

So here how Edge will work. Assuming the 2 lines in question get the cheapest version of their respective phones.

iPhone 6 is $650 so the cost will be $27.08 a month for 24 months. That line will also get a line access discount $25. So in reality that line's cost will be $2.08 higher. Really not even that since the taxes are lower because of the line discount. So it will stay about the same. In my area taxes on the discounted lines are $1.75 cheaper

The iPhone 6 Plus is $750 so that's $31.25 a month of course they get the $25 monthly discount too. So that's $6.25 a month more but probably lower due to lower taxes.

So basically those 2 lines getting those phones will raise the cost of your bill maybe $5 a month.

The benefit of Edge is the only upfront cost is the sales tax on those 2 phones which will probably be between $60-$150 depending on what the sales tax rate is in your area. On a subsidy the iPhone 6 would be $200 plus $30 upgrade fee plus sales tax the 6 plus would be $300 plus $30 upgrade fee plus tax. So on subsidy you're looking at $560 plus sales tax upfront.

The person not doing anything plan pricing won't change.

As long as you are not upgrading early and you make all your Edge payments the phone is yours to keep or do whatever. You only turn it in if you haven't made all 24 payments and you want to upgrade before 24 months. In order to upgrade early you'd have to pay at least 75% the cost of the phone or wait 18 months. Which is the same thing.

After you pay the Edge plan off and if you are not upgrading again you lose the Edge discount, but Verizon has a Month2Month discount for lines off contract which is the same thing. You'll just have to log in an add that manually or call in to activate it.

Mrhelper, EXCELLENT description of the Edge program.

I am guessing Early edge plan is only for the main phone line on the account.

I was offered Early Edge on on the main line, and $200 off the full retail price of a new phone for my 2nd when I looked into it.

Of course this was a 'promotion' and could get pulled anytime.

No it's not just for the main line.  I upgraded my son's line using Early Edge a ways back.

Every time I call, it's a different promotion or story I guess.  I would gladly do a couple Edge phones, but paying

$650 out of pocket (-$200 from VZW) is just not appealing to me for one of the lines.

Yep not just for the main line. We've done 2, one in August and one in Sept, neither was the main line.
