$350 minus $10 for each full month of your contract term that you complete, i.e.,

$350 - (10 x 11) = $240

Don't forget getting a possible negative on your credit report, for canceling a contract.  This might not make it as appealing for another company to sign you on as a new customer.

Technically, the contract would be fulfilled when the ETF is paid. It would not cause a "negative" on a credit report.

If the ETF is not paid, that would be a different story.

I have heard both sides to this, I wish I could really confirm the credit report piece.

If I could sign a 24mo contract, and cancel at the 12 month mark, my ETF would only be $230 + being able to keep the Phone I just had, and sell it off.  If this was a 32gb iPhone (newest model), I could easily sell it for $400-500.

Who needs the Verizon Edge plan, when you can do it on your own, for cheaper?

That is why EVERY single review of this new EDGE plan has determined it to be a rip-off for the customer and a cash cow for Verizon.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the cash to front for a new phone while waiting for an old phone to sell in order to use the funds towards the purchase of a new phone.

I would also think the same.. I can't believe I am paying $90 for a 300 MB data plan when similar comparable services are available for much less. and I haven't experienced that service of Verizon is any better.

We will be purchasing 2 new 32gb iPhones after Apples Sept 10th announcement. Typically this would be $640-650 down payment easy, on a 2 year contract.  If the next phone happens to start at 32gb, that would just be a bonus.

I have tried to rationalize the Edge program in my head, and it almost works - but after writing this all down it is really insane.

From how I read the Edge program with it's vague details, I can obtain the same phones for the down-payment of the 1st of 24 month payment (+ full device taxes, if they follow their tablet/device purchase program guidelines).  $1500 / 24 months is $62.50 a month + plan package.  So after 10 months, I would have caught up to what is required down for a typical 2 year contract.

To me, this plan reads like it is designed for people with little down-payment money, but can absorb the extra $30-60 extra to get the phone they really want.

If you trade in at 12 months (50% paid off time) you can give them your old phone (so they can refurb and resell), and start over with a new 24 month payment agreement, starting with paying full taxes of your next device + the 1st of 24 months to repay the device.

  • So the actual service plan is the same price if your on Edge, or a 2 year contract - that subsidized cost never comes out of the plan price when on Edge.
  • Your likely to pay full device taxes on the phone, at the first down payment - regardless that you will trade the phone in at 12 months.
  • At the 10-11 month period into your contract, you are past the down payment cost of what you would have put down for the phone on a typical 2 year contract - officially paying double for that phone.  Your device payment, and the subsidized cost that never left the plan in the first place.

Of course we can all be suprized on the 25th if the details are different, but I am not holding my breath.

I've done online chat twice with Verizon agents to confirm the following:

  • I could cancel my contract
  • Pay the early termination fee of $350 - ($10 * number of months paid on 2-year contract)
  • Keep the phone
  • Immediately start a new 2-year agreement with a new phone
  • Have no adverse credit impact

If planning to get a new phone every year, the decision between planning to pay the ETF vs. enrolling in Edge comes down to the expected resale value of the 1-year-old phone. Getting $400 for a phone that originally retailed for $849 makes paying the ETF slightly cheaper. But based on recent iPhone 5 values now that the 5c has been released, $300 is a more reasonable estimate meaning Edge comes out more than $100 cheaper.

The other benefits to planning to pay the ETF are:

  • Keep the phone for 2 years and save a few hundred vs. the Edge plan
  • Switch carriers after a year
