I live in a suburb of a large city, fewer than 100 yds from a major road. I am in a one-story above-ground building and yet I get a ton of dropped calls using a Samsung Galaxy S3. Was never an issue in my old city and I never have calls drop anywhere but home. Seems kind of ridiculous given the location. Anything I can do to get around this or should I be trying another carrier when my contract runs out next month? I have no landline here so it's been extra obnoxious to constantly be losing my calls.

You could try resetting your SIM card, i.e., turn off the phone, remove the SIM card (be careful not to touch the gold contacts), wait a few minutes, then reinsert the SIM card, turn the phone back on, and allow it a few minutes to establish a fresh network connection.
