Did you get fooled by the "add a tablet for $10 a month" mailer?

I'm a small-potatoes Verizon user, but I've been a customer since 2003. By small-potatoes, I mean I have a simple phone (not Smart Phone) and a simple plan. (I'm a tech-savvy senior on a fixed income and only want to pay for what I need...nothing more.) I have the Share Everything plan with a simple phone - unlimited voice and text, 350 MB of data, which I probably won't use because I have an iPad.

I got this great offer in the mail. "Add a tablet for $10 a month!" it yelled. I wanted to add the iPad for those times I'm on the road and away from a hotspot. I drove to the local Verizon store.  "Sure," says the manager, who greeted me at the door. Long story short...no, you can't "add a tablet for $10" unless to you a 1 GB data plan and then it's $20 a month. How did they find this out after I'd been there 20 minutes? - because "the system" won't let them add the tablet to my plan for $10 and one salesman came out from the back and said, "Oh, yeah. I tried that yesterday...she has to have 1 GB plan."  Is it in the fine print on the mailer? Who knows? I calmly held up the mailer in the manager's face and tore it into bits before walking out. Thank you for letting me vent, and if any of you are in my same position, watch out. (I'm sure there are other "the system won't let us" cases with other plans.)

On the Share Everything plan, the tablet IS $10 a month, and your 300 Mb plan IS eligible  for this $10 plan. The store employees tried to sell you a full crock. Clearly they were untrained on current policies and incompetent. You should call Customer Service if you are still interested in adding your tablet (provided it has verizon 3G/4G modem in it) to your plan. That mailer offered "standard" pricing, so you should have no problem there.

Just realize that 300 Mb is a VERY meager amount of data so using a tablet along with a phone will use it up very quickly.

Thanks for the reply. RE: the 300 MB - I don't use my phone for data at all; it just was part of the bundled plan. And as for the iPad, my idea is to continue to use WI FI hotspots for most of my data, as I've done for a long time, but to have the Verizon option to check my email or an occasional map when I need to and have no hotspot to use. That occasional use is worth the extra $10 a month. And yes, I bought the Verizon-enabled iPad, knowing I might want to go this route at some point.

I'm just not sure about the store thing. I went to the store instead of changing my plan online because 1) I couldn't find the $10 add-on option at Verizon's online site and 2) I thought it might be easier to have the iPad there for them to enable it.

I'll have to sleep on this and attack it again if I feel up to it. I'm so sick of it taking so much time and effort to try not to be ripped off.

The rep assumed you wanted to keep your old plan.  Since you want to keep your old plan it has a different pricing structure.  The rep wasn't trying to sell him the full crock if the OP wants to keep his old plan.

It was croc considering you leaving your domain going there only to find out you have to change your plan...I have unlimited data what if i went all the way to a corporate store only to find out that maybe i needed to change my current plan..It should be stated in the advertisement so you dont have to waste your time

If I understand you correctly...

You are already on a CURRENT SHARE plan?   Or is it an older basic phone plan with unlimited options?

The "share plan" was introduced this spring/summer.  If your plan predates that it was not a "Share" plan to begin with.

Under your current unlimited talk and text plan you pay about $70 plus taxes and fees?  (Assuming it is a current plan)

( basic phone $30 +  unlimited talk text and 300 mb data $40  = $70)

If you change to a shared plan with a tablet, with the minimum 4 GB of data your plan should still be $70 plus taxes and fees.

( basic phone $30 + tablet $10  +  plan with 4GB $30 =$70)

I see a break even for you or do I have the incorrect information?

Yes, that's all correct. I had an old plan with unlimited voice, pay per text and no data for $70 +/-; a Verizon rep informed me I could now get unlimited voice & text plus 300 MB of data for the same price, so I was switched. This happened about a month ago. I didn't know what the plan was called - just what it gave me for the price. It appears to be an "old plan" as it's not called "shared" on my online Verizon account.

Thanks for the reply and I will look into it again soon. If it turns out that yes, I can have unlimited text/voice plus 4GB (or even 1) for $70 or $80, then I continue to blame the store personnel for a frustrating dead-end experience. Actually, I'll blame them anyway for arguing among themselves in front of me and showing how untrained and rude they are.
