I just ported my number away from Verizon and for some reason my Verizon device is unable to be activated under any other VZW account because the device itself is suspended temporarily which has caused quite the inconvenience since i've already sold the phone. My account was never past due. Directions for porting say you shouldn't cancel your service until after the port is done. Is this some sort of way to punish people who want to leave Verizon? Shame!

I would guess it is suspended until the final amount due has been paid, which may include any ETF and/or overages.
Another reason for the suspension may be because when a number is ported out, Verizon makes the cancellation effective on the last day of your billing cycle. Not sure if this would have any effect on the phone being unavailable to be activate elsewhere, though.
I don't necessarily think this is a "sort of way to punis people who want to leave Verizon". Maybe to punish people who want to leave without paying their final bill/ETF, but as soon as it is taken care of, I would assume the phone would be fine.

agreed, ETF and/or final bill should be paid otherwise a suspension on the device would be placed.
being that i was month to month (no more contract), paid my final bill a few days early, ported the same day. . well. . that's where i'm a little frustrated as to why they would have to suspend the phone itself.

It would certainly depend on when your billing cycle ends, then, I would assume. Also, if the port completed prior to your billing cycle ending. Additionally while service is normally paid a month in advance, any overages would appear on the next month's bill. So simply stating you paid your final bill and ported the same day does not mean you wouldn't necessarily receive another bill.
Good luck.

i think i'll need the good luck. with unlimited talk and text and 2GB of data that had no overage, there really is no reason to suspend the device (bill due 11/10. . was paid in full before porting, bill cycle end 11/15, port complete 11/7). thanks for your feedback though rcschnoor. .very informative!

When you initiate a port out, your Verizon service will suspend pending disconnect until the last day of your cycle, regardless of when the port is actually completed. As the service is still active (meaning not disconnected) the phone is still tied to the line until the disconnect completes.
