Contract questions when upgrading one line on a family plan.

We are on the nationwide talk&text share 700 plan with 4 lines. We want to use the upgrade on one of the lines. I understand that that will require a new contract. My questions are:

  1. Will that change the plan for all lines? I assume this is a yes.
  2. Will the new contract apply to only the upgraded line or to all the lines? I would like to know this because in the near future I plan to move the line that I am using (non upgraded line) to a single plan or maybe even take the number to a different carrier.
    1. If Yes: Will I have to pay a fee to move the line/number even though the phone on that line did not get upgraded?

The way I see it is that if the contract applies to all lines and there is a breakup fee, then I might just upgrade my line as well and stay on the family plan. But if the contract does not apply to the non upgraded lines or the break up fee does not apply to the non upgraded lines then I will keep my line on the family plan and not upgrade it until i decide what i want to do with the line/number.

The only way it would change the plan is if you are going from a basic to a smartphone on the line receiving the device or you have unlimited data on the line that has the upgrade.  Basic to a smartphone on a nationwide plan would require at least a $30.00 2gb data plan and unlimited data drops on lines that sign a new two year contract.

Only the line that uses the upgrade signs a new 2 year contract, all other lines remain on their current contracts.

Hi CPPCrispy. I'm excited that it's time for you to start considering an upgrade. With all the changes lately, I can see why you have questions. No worries - I have answers.

You do not need to change the plan for all the lines. You can keep the same calling plan when you upgrade. In fact, you can even keep the same data plan if you'd like. Check out #2 and #7 at http://bit.ly/RkwwJv to see the details.

Each line has it's own contract. So if you upgrade line A but leave line B, C, and D the same way then line A is the only line with the new contract. The other lines just continue on their merry way the same as they were before unless you make a change. We certainly hope that change is not leaving us though, so please let us know if there's something that might be drawing that line away from the wireless family. If the user is just looking to switch to it's own single line plan under a new name, that's super easy through our AOL http://bit.ly/JG6iOD service. There's no fee to put a line on it's own account or plan since it's not being cancelled.

Thank you

Not applicable

Each line of service has it's own contract.  You can upgrade a device on one line and have no effect on the other lines.  If you want to purchase a subsidized phone, you would need to sign a new contract for that line of service.  It can keep the same plan it has, but would lose unlimited data if it has that.  Going from a basic phone to a smartphone does not require a different plan.  It does, however, require a data plan of 2GB for $30 or a larger data plan if you want.  There will also be a $30 upgrade fee if you purchase a subsidized phone.
