I have a family share plan with 5 lines. I have unlimited data plan that I want to keep. I was told I can use another lines upgrade to get a phone and put that phone on my line and then be able to keep my unlimited data. My question is do I have to activate the phone on the line I used the upgrade and then switch it to my line or can I just activate the phone on my line to keep unlimited data?

Definitely, definitely activate the phone on the line you upgraded first. As soon as it's activated, you can switch the upgraded line back to its original device. Then of course activate the phone you just got on whatever line you'd like.
Reason being is that by instantly switching to the new phone your run the risk of the system registering the upgrade as an alternate upgrade, and can result in loss of your unlim data. And trust me... it's near impossible to get back on any level after even a systematic error!!
