So, my wife and I still haven't switched over to smart phones yet, mostly because of the data plan cost. Her phone has recently been acting up and we want to get something cheap that will last until our contract is up in August. A friend of ours has offered to let us have his old Verizon Galaxy SIII.
Question: can we just activate this device under my wife's phone # without being charged for a data plan? She just wants to use it for texting and calling only - no email or internet access is required.

What a nice friend! Unfortunately, the answer is 'no' ... Verizon requires a data plan for any smartphone that's activated.
