Zeal and email

I just purchased the Zeal phone.  I have no data package.  While checking my actual usage online, it appears as though my data usage has gone thru the roof.  I have seen data "pay as you use" for times that are in the middle of the night, the time spent is 0.007. I am up to 7718.912 kb already and I am sure I have been using the phone only at at about half of these times.  I still have a week to go on this billing cycle and cannot imagine what it will cost.  Verizon cannot really help til billing cycle ends,  but did tell me if someone is emailing me, it will come thru as a data us, which is also odd, I don't know of anyone who would be emaling me at 2 AM..  Any help would be appreciated .  I have never used mobile email and not sure how this works , it is like something is running in the background and connecting with my phone,

Call and have data blocked.... Even if you do not have a data plan, unless specifically requested to be blocked, data can make it through.

Also, you may want to add the $10 / 25 MB plan for this month only - since you are already at $16 plus in data charges PAYG - add the plan and backdate it for the entire billing cycle and you will pay only $10.

Then block web access, as budone suggested.

thanks, i thought someone told me that a block would block everything, including Facebook, which I do use. But i use it when it suits me.  Does it sound like this is some type of spam that is coming thru at night?  Since I posted this comment, I have had nothing coming thru for about 4 days.  Very strange.

A total data block will block all data, including picture messaging. Regular texts will still get through.

You can do a block on mobile web, and downloads, and things that would use data, but still allow you to send/receive picture messages.

When you say you "use" Facebook on your phone, is it through the browser, an app? Or is it just the text notifications and status updates to 32665? The app will use data; texting does not.

on the few occasions I have used FB on my phone, I go in through the browser, which I had thought would just be a $1.99 charge for the time spent on this .Which I understood and I'm ok with that.

It is just whatever this is coming in at the wee hours of the morning that is puzzling.  When this billing cycle ends, a collegue suggested calling Verizon and asking them to look and see what the 2 am data uses were for. My daughter had this happen , received a bill for a premium text, did not remember purchaseing anything, had Verizon check, they gave her the name of the company ( it was a horoscope thing) and told her how to stop it.

Could be Facebook, could be backup Assistant, which shouldnt be charged to you.  My daughter had this happen , received a bill for a premium text, did not remember purchaseing anything, had Verizon check, they gave her the name of the company ( it was a horoscope thing) and told her how to stop it.

good point and I had forgotten about backup assistant.  I think it is set up to run monthly and I thought that came thru on usage as a text message?  Says "sent from 0999999999"?

Hello,

Thank you Community Members for posting your comments and helpful advice. It is very much appreciated.

Verizon Wireless offers many blocks for select devices. For the Zeal, you do have the option to have the Data Block added at no extra cost. This block will prevent your phone from being able to send/receive data using your device. With this block activated, you will not be able to access the Internet through your device, or use applications to access Social Networking sites. Text and Picture messaging is not affected with the Data Block in place.  For steps on how to add this block, please view the information below:

  1. Sign in to My Verizon.

  2. From the My Services tab, select Parental Controls.

  3. Click the Usage Controls tab.

  4. Scroll down to the Service Blocks section.

  5. Click Explore.

  6. Select the appropriate line from the Blocks For: drop-down.

  7. Select check box next to the service(s) you wish to add or remove blocking.

  8. Click Continue.

  9. Click Close.

    Thank you.
