How can I get a Kyocera Brigadier to activate when a new text message comes in?

When I get a new text message the phone makes a notification sound. I was wondering if there is a way to set it up so that the phone "turns on" (the light comes on), and even better, if the text would come up. I am a volunteer firefighter and we get notification of our calls via text. Right now it's a 3 step process to get to the text and if I'm asleep sometimes I'm not sure if I actually heard it or not and the phone activating (light coming on) cues me in to a new text message.So far I haven't found a way to do so.
