I have the same problem on my Droid Maxx. This has been a problem for a long time..
Steps to reproduce are simple:
iPhone sends MMS with text caption to Android.
MMS shows up as a slide show and only way to view picture is to pause the picture after 10 or 15 seconds. Can't zoom in, and viewing characteristics are crap compared to normal MMS.
It doesn't matter if you're on WiFi, network, or have "auto retrieve" set..
Not sure if it's a verizon problem or Android, but crazy that neither one has a solution.
Work arounds:
1. Skip ahead in the slide show and pause to view picture.
2. Download another messaging application to see if it shows up there.
Any update from Verizon??

Ask your iPhone or iOS device friends to turn off iMessage when sending picture/ video messages. iMessage only works between iOS devices. See if this helps it worked for my daughters iPhone and my samsung galaxy s3 device
