How can I change the chat options in the 6.4.4 update? And get my car to read my messages again?

Since all these updates happened, my car has started selectively reading messages via bluetooth. I'm assuming it's because half of my contacts now default to Chat instead of SMS. How can I turn off chat, or change its behavior? I also really hate that one of my conversations has now decided to list the person's name on every message, even though it isn't a group conversation, and the contact name is at the top of the screen. In short, I REALLY hate the new update.
