Is there a way to prevent sent text messages from being saved in the sent items folder? I know you can delete them after they have been sent, but I want them to not save at all.

You really don't need to post your question more than once....most of us read several of the forums and I already answered you the FIRST time I saw the question. It's just good "netiquette" not to double post.
